Welcome to Clayton, New Mexico.

Morris Herzstein settled in Clayton in the 1890's and became a prominent merchant and rancher. His son Albert remembers a happy childhood in Clayton and contributed over a quarter of a million dollars to the Herzstein Memorial Museum making it one of the finest small museums to be found anywhere.

Located on the high plains, Clayton enjoys a relatively moderate climate with an annual average snowfall of 22.4 inches and average total precipitation of 15.42 inches.

Other attractions in Clayton include: the historic old Eklund Hotel which now serves delicious food and libations; an excellent library featuring a large collection of western literature; many green spaces for picnicking and relaxing; the Shrine of the Testaments, an art gallery of Biblical history; and a more modern art gallery at the Pottery Shop. The Kiowa National Grassland northeast of town encourages a stroll along the Santa Fe Trail and enjoyment of the area's flora and fauna.

In addition to dinosaur tracks, Clayton Lake State Park has excellent fishing, with picnic and camping facilities. Capulin Volcano National Monument has an informative visitor's center and a view of five states from the top of the volcano. Clayton has a number of shops featuring arts, crafts, collectibles, souvenirs and other interesting merchandise. For the traveler there are nine restaurants, six motels, several convenience stores, and a full service campground.

Capulin Volcano: This natural wonder tops the must-see list for most tourists in Northeast New Mexico. Drive 58 miles west Clayton on Hwy 64 and 87 to the town of Capulin, then three miles north on Hwy 325 to Capulin Volcano National Monument.

Herzstein Memorial Museum: Gleaming hardwood floors and colorful stained glass windows serve as a lovely setting for the display of antiques and artifacts which have been given or loaned by the many people interested in preserving the history and heritage of Union County. Furnishings from a doctor's office of the 1930's, an eye doctor's equipment, a model railroad with downtown Clayton as the background, vintage clothing and hats, Native American artifacts, toys and furniture are among the many items to be seen in the museum. Other displays feature the Santa Fe Trail, dinosaurs, family memorabilia and many other interesting themes.

J.W. Heringa

J.W Heringa, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, near Mount Dora. He was born July 4, 1929, in Clayton to Ed Heringa and Pauline (Thomas) Heringa. A lifelong resident of Union County, J.W. gradauted from Clayton High School in 1947 and New Mexico State University in 1951 before serving two years in the Army Air Corps.

While in high school, J.W. started flying and it has been a large part of his life since then. He was very involved in rodeo while in college and later belonged to the Flying Farmers and he served on the REA board for several years. He was a member of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association, the Clayton High School Reunion Association and the Airplane Operators Pilots Association. J.W.was very proud of his girls and he loved to fly and he loved the land as well. He said many times, "If you take care of the land, it will take care of you." He was truly a man ahead of his time in many aspects of ranching and horsemanship.



Patsy R. Reynolds

Patsy Robertson Reynolds, 67, of Duncan, Ariz., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, after a lengthy fight for her life following several surgeries.

She was born March 12, 1941, in Clayton, N.M., to Hugh Holland Robertson and Lola May Hagerty.

Most of her childhood, until she married, was spent on the Sand Flat Ranch in Catron County, N.M. She married Leon "J" Reynolds on Feb. 14, 1958, in Apache Creek, N.M. They had three children, Linda, Lonny and Larry, while living in Luna, N.M. That is where she began raising her children.



Small plane crashes in northeastern New Mexico

Union County sheriff's investigators say one person is dead following a small plane crash Wednesday evening in northeastern New Mexico.
